Weekly Chronicles: Tony Gwynn Edition

KayLynn · June 22, 2014 · 5 Comments

tony-gwynn

Monday morning I was on the parking shuttle heading towards the airport when a notification popped up on my phone.  I wanted to burst out crying.  Beloved baseball great, Tony Gwynn, had passed away.

Tony Gwynn has a special place in the heart of most San Diegans whether they are baseball fans or not.  He was known as Mr. Padre during his major league career and transitioned to Mr. San Diego in his last career coaching at San Diego State.

It was fitting to have Tony on my mind at the airport because that’s where I met him some years ago.  He was on my flight to St. Louis to work a game for ESPN.  The gate agents offered to escort him to the lounge but he wanted to stay at the gate and kindly chatted with every fan who approached him.

The city will miss this great man and my thoughts go out to his family and loved ones.

Khaleef, he was a great man in addition to being a great baseball player. He came to San Diego for college and never left; it was a mutual love affair.
