We all loved our trip on Holland America’s Nieuw Amsterdam.
Since she is a sister to the Eurodam (which I sailed in 2014) I knew what to expect and wasn’t disappointed.
The Ship
I love the classic style of Holland America ships. The Nieuw Amsterdam is just as beautiful as the others.
One of the features in all Holland America ships is an art collection. There is artwork all over including the stair landings and by the elevator doors on every floor.
Being the ship was named after New York, the theme is present throughout.
This NYC skyline light fixture is in the atrium and is quite beautiful when lit in the evening.
The artwork included sculptures…
Functional art like this clock.
And, of course, paintings.
Another Holland America feature is fresh flower arrangements throughout the ship.
Some of them are just stunning and stopped me in my tracks to admire them a moment or two.
Below is the deck plan for this ship; click the image to enlarge.
Cabin
Our veranda cabin was very comfortable.
We enjoyed the balcony and the bit of extra room compared to the deck above.
We had plenty of storage and wouldn’t hesitate to book this cabin category again.
Service
The service was definitely up to the usual Holland America standards. We had wonderful service from our cabin stewards and our dining team; both of which I called out on the post-cruise survey.
Outside of those areas, the great service continued whether it was in the Ocean Bar or the buffet. I also enjoyed our CD who was very personable and with whom I enjoyed discussing Oprah’s book club pick.
Food
The food was very good and a cut above what we experienced on Royal Caribbean earlier in the year. I even liked lunch in the buffet!
The Dive-in grill was good but I still think Guy’s Burgers on Carnival are slightly better.
Entertainment
We didn’t see as much entertainment as usual but what we saw was enjoyable. We especially enjoyed listening to the BB King Blues Bands sets. I do wish I had spent some time with the piano players in Billboard Onboard but never got around to it!
Ending Comments
My husband earned his two star mariner pin this cruise and I’m working on my three star. The kids really enjoyed their cabin, the service and the ship but probably won’t be back on Holland America anytime soon. It was just a bit too sedate for them.
We are definitely going to be back in just a few short months and I will definitely cruise again over Thanksgiving.
