Five Things Friday

KayLynn · January 2, 2015 · Leave a Comment

gym

Did you notice all the sales and advertisements yesterday for health and fitness items?  We had gym ads in the paper, emails promoting sales on health and fitness books, magazines, accessories and more.

I think it’s great to have the chance to save on things we can use.  But those gyms are likely to end up look like the image above in two months than they do today.  I was the same way until  I found exercise I enjoy.

Health Deals of the Week

I thought I’d start sharing my favorite health and wellness offers every week.  There will be affiliate links but every little bit helps me keep the site going.

  • 4 Weight Watchers Cookbooks for $19.99 from Groupon
  • 90% Off Health & Fitness Magazines From DiscountMags.com(Valid thru Jan 4th)
  • Vionic® with Orthaheel® walking shoes at QVC
  • Fitness Deals with Living Social. Deal vouchers are how I found Pilates and Kaia Fit
  • Free shipping with code FREESHIP15 on all orders $50 or more at Vitalicious. I just had one of their delicious vitacakes last night for dessert. I also love the VitaPizza!

Cancer and Beef

cow-425164_640

I grew up eating a lot of beef. My parents would buy “a side of beef” which I guess is half the cow and fill the freezer with it to feed our family of six for months.  We also had chicken and pork with very little seafood.

The beef habit declined as a young adult most likely because my first husband grew up on an island and didn’t eat it.  But my rest of life husband loves beef and I’ve gradually gotten into the habit of having it once or twice a week.  Well, that’s over now.

A study came out explaining why red meat (and beef in particular) is linked to cancer.  There’s a sugar molecule it contains that causes inflammation in our bodies that evolves into cancer for many.  I don’t mind giving up beef, it’s cheese that’s a problem!  What do you think about the study?

Blogging

One thing I learned during my month away was that I need to write and Weight Chronicles will continue to be the venue for it.  I’m not going to worry about gaining readers, page views and all the other numbers.

There will be giveaways and reviews and I hope my quest for great health will help you in your wellness journey.

What I’ve Been Watching

Regular programming has been a wasteland the past two weeks but it gave my husband and I a chance to catch up on things we’ve had DVRed.  I finished the 14 hour documentary, The Roosevelts: An Intimate History, by Ken Burns.  I learned so much about how the events of their lives evolved as well as insight into American culture at the time.

One thing I noticed was that virtually everyone was thin.  People didn’t have processed foods and gadgets that did everything for them.  There’s something to be said for physical labor although I’m not giving up my washing machine anytime soon!

We also caught on on a bunch of episodes of Haven.  It was high-brow and low-brow television. 😛

Last 2014 Thoughts

Wednesday I took a look back at my goals for last year but there’s definitely more to reflect on than that.  There was loss in the year for me and my family including my husband’s father, my aunt and a high school best friend. There were break-ups that meant not only loss for the person involved but for family members who loved them.

We had joy as well.  The next generation of family members bring us delight as we watch them grow and form into their own personalities.  We saw new places, met new people and had new experiences that added to our lives.

I’m looking forward to seeing what 2015 brings!  How was your week?
