Trying Out Budget-Friendly Walmart Family Mobile Unlimited Plans

KayLynn · August 16, 2013 · 2 Comments

When my current wireless carrier announced last year that my unlimited data plan wouldn’t be grandfathered if my husband and I made any changes including phones the relationship was doomed.  This was on top of the additional $30 fee to our already expensive plan to upgrade my husband to a smartphone.  We needed a cheap wireless plan.

I’ve been studying unlimited plans from new and legacy wireless providers while waiting for our contract to complete later this year. That’s why I was excited to try out Walmart Family Mobile.  It also gave my husband a chance to try out a smartphone while he still had the security of his current “dumb” phone.
I learned that Walmart’s lowest price rate plan is just $39.88 a month for unlimited talk, text and web.  We currently pay far more and have to share 1,500 minutes between us!  It’s just $29.88 for unlimited talk and text if he decides not to make the switch to smartphone long-term.  You can mix and match plans up to five lines!
Last weekend we headed off to Walmart to buy the myTouch phone and a starter kit to activate  it.  The starter kits are just $25 and you’ll need one for each line.  If you already have a GSM phone it most likely can be used with Walmart Family Mobile service.  This can end up saving you even more money. Of course our current phones (including my iPhone) are CDMA and not compatible.
We quickly found the phone we wanted and a starter kit and went to purchase it.  This was the “hardest” part of the process.  Our first trip involved showing up too early for the Wireless department.  You’ll want to check hours because they differ from the store hours.
Since the Walmart clerk will activate the phone for people if they want, this can take some time and you may have a wait if a lot of people want a new phone.  We had just one person in front of us and 20 minutes later had our purchase made.  I elected to activate it at home.
The instructions for setting up my account online and getting the phone activated were easy to follow.  In a short time, my husband was able to try out his new phone and the learning curve was underway.  See more of my shopping experience at the Two Savvy Sisters Google + page.
In a couple of weeks I’ll get a text message with billing information and I can pay in Walmart stores, online or by phone.  If you prefer autopay that can be arranged as well.  I love the option for online account management.
Next month I’ll share more about the phone and our first month’s experience.  Check out the SoFab Back to School Digital Magazine  where Walmart Family Mobile is featured.

Switching to Walmart’s services could pay for remodeling my master bedroom in less than 2 years! It’s crazy that we pay so much for phone services these days!

That’s a great way to put the savings to work! I didn’t think about looking ahead that far.
