I come from a family with a long history of military service dating back to the American Revolution. In more recent history veterans include both my parents, my two sons, my stepson (who’s still on active duty) and me.
My service was mostly at a hospital and it shaped me in many ways. I feel guilty accepting recognition because I got far more out of it than I gave and my sacrifice was nothing compared to so many others.
Whether you’re enjoying a holiday or working today, please take a few moments to remember the sacrifice of the military to allow all of us to have the freedom we enjoy today.

Thank you so much for your service, Kay Lynn. It’s always funny to me how each service member that I thank always says, “I didn’t/don’t do anything special, I’m not a hero…it’s those other guys over there that are amazing.” Service over self isn’t for everyone and my hat is off to you – and your family.

Denise, that is so right. I guess if we weren’t the ones who died or lost a limb our sacrifice wasn’t great enough. My youngest son is now a paramedic/firefighter and his service to the public is heroic to me. First responders are amazing!
