It was finally the day to leave for the start of my transatlantic cruise trip! Since my flight wasn’t leaving until after 3 pm, I worked today which helped keep my mind busy while waiting for flight time. At noon, I shut everything down and had lunch at home before leaving for the airport at 12:30 pm. Steve drove me down and we had no traffic issues.
Airport Experience
Terminal 2 wasn’t busy. I checked in at Lufthansa which had a very short line. My ticket included one free checked bag.
I also had a carryon and a personal item. TSA precheck had one couple in front me and the worst part was waiting for the man to empty his pockets. I couldn’t believe how much stuff he had in there!
After that I went to the gate (50) which was very empty and never did get too full. The agents got the gate an hour in advance.
They were calling people up sporadically the last 30 minutes whom I guess had bid for upgrades to business or premium economy.
Boarding started at 2:40 pm and it wasn’t long before my boarding group (B) was called up.
Flight to Barcelona
My row of four in the middle had 1 assigned (me) but another lady moved to the other end of the row after boarding finished; she was in the row behind me which was full. Kept me from being able to lay down fully but I certainly didn’t own the seats. 🙂
I was able to put my personal item under the seat next to me for plenty of leg room.
We pushed away on time (3:05 pm) and after making our way slowly to the head of the line to take off were in the air.
I started watching a movie as we pulled away which kept me busy until the first service. (Movies watched were Yesterday, Fisherman’s Friends and Don’t worry he won’t get far on foot). Also watched four episodes of BBC series Ghosts and two episodes of Mad Men on my iPad).
The first drink service started about 35-45 minutes after takeoff. I had vodka soda and pretzels.
Then dinner wasn’t long after.
I had the turkey dinner (other choice was vegetarian pasta) which was fantastic. Had sparkling water with dinner drink service.
Lights went out after the trays were picked up for the next 7 hours. I think I got about an hour or so of sleep but really couldn’t get comfortable enough to nap longer. There were about 6 restrooms a few rows behind me and I never had to wait for one.
About two hours before landing, they lights came up and it was time for our second meal (breakfast). There was no choice and we had eggs with roasted tomatoes and mushrooms along with fruit and a roll.
It was good (even the eggs which look kind of funny). I had a couple of cups of coffee to wash it down. They collected headphones about 45 minutes before landing which didn’t impact me since I was using my own. The rest of the trip to Barcelona will be in the next post.
