Tales From the Scale: Facing the Music

Where did everyone go this past weekend?  The roads, stores and my Weight Watchers meeting were all scarce of people.  It was nice but also a little eerie!

Weekly Movement & Nutrition

Since Wednesday is New Year’s Day (and a blogging holiday for me), I’ll include the workouts in today’s post.  I worked out four times last week — two cardio sessions and two strength sessions.  Not bad for Christmas week and something to improve on next year.

Eating was another story.  I gave myself permission to enjoy holiday treats and there were way too many.  I continued to eat healthy lunches but followed them up with cookies, chocolates or cake.

One sign of a long-term behavior change gives me hope.  We went to our local Outback Steakhouse for Christmas Eve dinner.  I ordered the petite filet mignon and my sides were the salad with fat-free dressing and a plain baked sweet potato.  I automatically wanted a healthy style steak dinner.

Weigh-In

Saturday was face the music day.  Mid-September I had a total weight loss of 30.4 pounds since January 5th. Since then I’ve gone off the rails.  It all started with an eight day business/blogging trip in shortly after and never got better!  My total weight loss now is:

– 20.2 pounds

Yep, I’ve gained over 10 pounds the last quarter of the year.  No wonder my shirts are feeling a little tighter and my jeans aren’t loose!  Those remaining Christmas cookies are going to my office today.

Challenges Ahead

I don’t have any travel this week or social plans other than a 5k race with Denise from Do You Have That in My Size? on Saturday.  My goal is to track every bite every day this week and exercise 5 times.

How did your week towards great health go?

You are so much healthier than you were this time last year and you keep moving forward, no matter what – I love and admire that about you!

In terms of my own health stuff, I’m within 30 pounds of a healthy BMI now and it’s finally hitting me that it’s possible I’ll achieve that milestone in the next year, which has me a little nervous, to be honest. I’ve just decided not to look ahead – so tough for me, I even read the end of books before I finish because I can’t stand the suspense – and keep putting one foot in front of the other, doing the same things I’ve been doing all along, and trust that I’m doing what’s right for my health and happiness.

Denise, you are another person who inspires me. It’s hard to convince myself it’s too cold to walk outside when you’re doing it in the same neck of the woods. I will make year long goals but set mini ones as well that I’ll focus on each month.

I think it’s so difficult to continue with new healthy habits for 12 months without a hitch. As long as you are moving forward, that’s what you should focus on. You are now 20lbs closer to your goal! :)?

Khaleef, I agree and I think learning how to deal with those hitches is what helps us make them lifetime habits. You are such an inspiration to me.

Well…at the risk of sounding obnoxious, I work-out on a treadmill every day. It’s a habit I started in my 20s (or was it my 30s?) and I’ve kept up with it ever since. I’ve also lost 12 lbs. in the last two years by eating less…the same things (and not always “good”), just less. And some days – not eating after dinner. Made a huge difference. Overall, sounds like you have accomplished a lot yourself. You’ll get back on track once the New Year starts. Good luck!

Pam, congratulations on losing the weight. I definitely eat less than I did a year ago and make much better choices. I’m most proud of kicking my nonstop soda habit.

I haven’t been able to exercise for six weeks because of a broken foot. But once this boot comes off, I am going to commit to regular exercise in 2014.

Helene, you have the motivation so the broken bone is just a bump in the road.

Janie, my husband and I had a heck of a time getting in our normal works this month due to illness. I’ve been having to go alone and hope he’s well soon!
