COVID-19: Week 13 #Stayathome Update

KayLynn · June 14, 2020 · Leave a Comment

We just finished up 13 weeks of #stayathome practices and what a week.  I think 2020 will go down in American history as a pivotal year just like 1968.  Here are a few good things that happened this past week:

  • Nascar banned confederate flag display at it’s events
  • Several cities/states have passed police reform packages
  • Companies that 2-3 years ago ago ignored the Black Lives Matter movement openly support it and are starting the process of re-evaluating themselves
  • Confederate statues all over the country have been coming down including Jefferson Davis in the Kentucky state capitol
  • Leaders at corporations are being held accountable for their past words/actions

I’m not naive enough to only see the good.  Another black man lost his lives at the hands of police in Atlanta this weekend leading to the resignation of the police chief.  The work we have to do moving forward will take time.  I feel good hopeful that we’re actually going to do it.

The downside is that COVID-19 transmissions are increasing in nearly half the states.  I was stunned to read the death toll may top 200,000 by the end of summer.  Why can’t we learn?

My Week in Review

We had a couple of moments of beauty near home this week.  The picture above is bougainvillea in the courtyard area of our condo building.  Right now we have red, white and blue flowers which are beautiful. The timing for the blooms is perfect as we head toward July 4th and work on the nation we want to be.

We also saw this beautiful bird visit the same courtyard for a few minutes.

A couple of years ago we had one right outside our back patio.  Maybe the same one.

More Openings

Bars, gyms, leisure hotel stays, movie theaters, campgrounds, schools and day camps all were able to open as of Friday but with strict rules and much reduced capacity.  Even so, our newspaper reported one wine bar was one table short of full 30 minutes after it opened.

This coming week, assuming the county approves, nail salons, massage businesses and tattoo parlors can reopen; again with struct rules and reduced capacity.

What won’t be opening until at least August 24th is my work office.  My employer announced this during a company wide webmeeting Friday.  I read an interesting analysis somewhere that said many companies will probably not open offices back up until there’s a vaccine if they’re able to work from home effectively.

Shopping

I didn’t go anywhere this past week.  My husband did a shopping trip to get this week’s groceries.  He also took his car to our usual repair spot because of an air conditioning problem in our older car.  They wanted $1700 to fix the problem in a 14 year old car.

We said thanks but no thanks.  He had put over $400 into the same issue last year.  It cost nearly that much this year just to get the diagnosis.

Entertainment

I didn’t go to the zoom HOA meeting after all.  It’s really hard for me to jump on another webmeeting after a day/week full of them for work.  But I did attend another cooking class at Chibo yesterday.

It was fun and I highly recommend them if you’re interested in that type of thing.  The Chibo platform also hosts cocktail classes if that’s your preference. 😉

This Coming Week

I’m signed up for a couple of evening web events this week.  One is a book club and the other is a health education class.  Otherwise, it’ll be another week staying safe at home.  How aws your week?
