Weekly Tales: Heat Wave Edition

KayLynn · July 8, 2018 · 2 Comments

The temperature has been over 100 the past two days and will be very close today.  This is unusual in our area of San Diego and our poor air conditioner is struggling to keep up.

We’ve put off replacing it but hoping our 25+ year old cooling system hangs out until winter when we’ll update it.

Highlights

The highlight of the week was definitely spending a few days visiting the guy in the picture above.  He turned nine and it was so much fun to spend his birthday with him and his mom.  Unfortunately, travel delays on the outbound (first maintenance issue and then weather in connection city) cut us short about 7 hours but it was worth the hassles.

Speaking of travel, I had packed this bag of keto snacks to keep me from going off plan.  On the way out, I also bought a all-beef Niman Farms hotdog (with no bun or condiments).  Then picked up keto friendly dinner at a drive through on the way to their home as it was after 9 pm.

We did go out to dinner a couple of times.  We ordered tableside guacamole with veggies instead of chips.  Veggies weren’t free; there was a $3 charge. 🙁

But there was enough to include leftovers in my breakfast the next day.

I also ordered a fish entree with chili butter and substituted broccolini for the potatoes.

The fish was very good but there wasn’t enough of it and too much broccolini!

My grandson picked Ihop for his birthday dinner where grandma had bacon and eggs but it sure made me crave some pancakes.  At home, I made up my first keto pancakes!

They might not look like much, but I loved them.  My next attempt will be with a recipe using whey protein isolate (less carbs) instead of almond flour.

My son sent me a photo of Stella, my newish granddog, with her Fourth of July attire.

She’s too cute not to share!

When I got back home, it was book club night the following evening.  This month we read The Immortalists by Chloe Benjamin.  It was okay, but I didn’t really root for any of the characters.  It definitely was thought provoking and drove a lot of conversation amongst us.

I got the bacon blue cheeseburger and substituted caesar salad for fries.

Favorite Reads

Here are a few of my favorite articles around the internet this week.

Destinations Detours and Dreams explores somewhere in my backyard.  Read about exploring Balboa Park; a gem in San Diego.

On any food plan, I think it’s important to track what your eating.  With keto, I am most interested in tracking macros (and fiber for net carbs).  Kasey Trenum lists the best keto apps for tracking macros.

Secret Flying passes along the news that the Dallas Fort Worth airport has opened two gaming lounges.  My grandson will love this the next time he connects in Dallas.

Thinking of going low-carb or keto?  Ditch the Carbs has 20 low-carb pantry essentials.  I have just about all.

Rockstar Finance has a money match-up where the topic is using credit cards versus cash.  I’m a credit card person now for the points.

Since it’s hot just about everywhere in the US, here’s a list of 18 items to take to the beach from Money Beagle.

Looking Ahead

Today, I’m meeting a girlfriend for iced tea and manicures at our favorite nail shop.  Later this week is my first business trip in a while.  I’m heading back East for just one overnight.  What’s on your plate this week?

It will be nice when things cool off just a little! It was great spending time with you – let’s do it again soon.

I’m so glad the temperature has dropped since the air conditioner didn’t make it through the weekend! It was fun and let’s definitely plan something.

I’ll look at when I’m in town and shoot you an email!
