Voyage of the Vikings: Paamiut, Greenland

KayLynn · June 24, 2024 · Leave a Comment

Today the Zuiderdam visits Paamiut, Greenland. Yesterday the Captain announced our port time has moved forward an hour than originally scheduled.  We were planning to walk around so that was fine.

Paamiut Morning

When I woke this morning we were approaching our anchorage spot and I saw icebergs and islands from our window.

I met Steve in the Crow’s Nest and had quite a view with my coffee including first peak of an iceberg.

We went to breakfast in the dining room when it opened at 7:30.

I ordered both specials along with a mimosa!

The waiter consolidated them on one plate and I enjoyed my meal.

Next time I would get the eggs over medium so I had some yolk to add moisture.

We passed larger pieces of ice during breakfast.

We got ready for the day and went for tender tickets in the billboard onboard area. Our tender group was 11 and it was about an hour wait since shore excursions had priority and they couldn’t run as many tenders due to size of dock.

Paamiut Town

It was a 10-minute ride and we passed very close to an iceberg (I got a nice pic on the way back) and a rusty fishing trawler. It was a steep walk up the pier (this is the next tender debarking).

The harbor was quite scenic.

Once there, I realized I didn’t bring our head nets and the flies were terrible!  Steve was trying to keep the flies away with his extra jacket.

They don’t bite supposedly but were trying to get into our ears, eyes, and mouth. Because of this we did a quick loop around town and got right back on the tender.  We used the free map we got at the dock.

We passed the church and cemetery.

These are whale jaw bones at the top of the staircase.

This is a fountain with whale tales.

It was a very scenic view of the Zuiderdam from town.

On the way back I got a photo of the very near iceberg.

Paamiut Afternoon

Back onboard we found the nets in the cabin and put them in our backpack for next port.  Then it was time for lunch. We had roasted turkey with cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes and gravy with rolls. I had the no-sugar added double chocolate tart and Steve had cheesecake.

After a nap I headed to the hot tub and Steve went to the Crow’s nest.

Then it was time to clean up for dinner.

Paamiut Evening

We had time to order (but not finish) a round of drinks in the Ocean Bar. I learned the cosmo is $1 too much for HIA so had to pay the difference.  That’s fine.

Five of us are here for dinner tonight.

I started with the gambas peri peri.

This was followed by the split pea soup.

I picked the Wiener schnitzel for my entree as did a couple of my tablemates.

Steve and the fifth one picked the strip loin steak. We all enjoyed our meals although the steaks were a touch overcooked. My dessert was the sorbet while Steve had a chocolate sundae.

The listed hot fudge is not to be found.

Afterwards we made our way to the show room where we found great seats. It turns out the comedian was actually a ventriloquist. He was very funny and it was clean humor which is nice to see.

Then it’s as back to the cabin to put away our delivered laundry and read a bit before lights out at 10 pm.

Below is today’s daily program.  Click the image for the full PDF.
